North Arlington Public Schools – Restart & Recovery Plan (20-21)

North Arlington Public Schools – Restart & Recovery Plan (20-21)

July 30, 2020

Good evening, school community members.

Over the past few weeks, our Restart and Recovery Planning Committee has been working diligently to establish a plan where our students and staff can begin some form of in-person instruction safely.  After conducting a survey of our entire school community, approximately 75% (1,000+ Responses) of our families prefer that their children attend modified in-person sessions as long as all recommended health and safety guidelines are in place.

With the health and safety of our children at the forefront of this decision-making process, we have established a schedule that will allow our students to attend school at approximately 50% capacity by developing two cohorts of students (Cohort A & Cohort B).  Cohort A will have the ability to attend in-person instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Cohort B will have the ability to attend in-person instruction on Thursdays and Fridays.  These in-person cohorts will be four hours each day, coupled with Google Meet sessions in the afternoon.  Alternating cohorts will be taking part in their assigned specials (e.g. art, music, physical education, etc.) virtually.  Everyone will be learning virtually on Wednesdays.  Students in self-contained settings, and most likely English Language Learners (ELL), will have the opportunity to attend in-person sessions four days per week.  Many, if not all, related services will also take place in-person.  “Grab and Go” lunches will be available daily.  Finally, siblings of different grades and schools will be placed within the same cohort.

Please remember that families also have the option for their child(ren) to solely participate in virtual learning.  To assist everyone in this process, we have labeled the aforementioned schedule as Phase 1 (September 8, 2020 – October 16, 2020).  The purpose of establishing different phases is to allow flexibility to families so that they’re able to modify their child(ren)’s type of instruction within reasonable periods of time.  Families who select the option of having their child(ren) learn completely through a virtual platform will have the ability to reassign them to in-person sessions after Phase 1.  This is necessary to maintain appropriate social distancing guidelines within the parameters of the schedules created based on your responses.

Please note that our Restart and Recovery Plan will be submitted to the Bergen County Interim Superintendent’s Office for review; however, we are still waiting on specific guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) and New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), which may alter these plans. A more detailed schedule, further representing our internal Phase 1 (September 8, 2020 - October 16, 2020), will be released early next week.  Additionally, a mandatory survey will also be made available to establish the number of students who will be participating in a hybrid model (In-person & Virtual) or learning completely virtually.

Our entire Restart and Recovery Planning Committee knows that everyone will still have a number of questions.  As previously mentioned, we will be providing more information next week, which will hopefully answers most of your inquiries.

As always, thank you very much for your support and patience during these challenging times.  We are all here for your children and we are putting their health and safety first.

Thank you and stay well.
