Good afternoon, parents and colleagues.

On November 30, 2020, the North Arlington Public School District, in coordination with the Bergen County Department of Health (BCDOH) and the North Arlington Department of Health (NADOH), implemented the fully remote learning model through January 18, 2021.

At that time, based on the NJDOH’s Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID19) Regional Risk Matrix and the NJDOH’s weekly COVID19 Activity Level Report, our region (Northeast) was identified as “High Risk” for the transmission of COVID19.

Since then, school officials and our local health department have been closely monitoring daily COVID19-related data throughout the Borough of North Arlington and previously mentioned weekly reports from the NJDOH.

Local Data

During an eight-month period (March – October), the NADOH identified 408 positive COVID19 cases within our community.  During a two-month period (November & December), the NADOH identified 607 positive COVID19 cases.  In seven days into January, the NADOH has identified 84 positive COVID19 cases.

During the window of time that North Arlington Public Schools have been implementing the fully remote learning model, from 11/30/20 to 1/7/21 (22 school days), we have identified 56 students and 12 staff members who have tested positive for COVID19.  Of the 56 students who tested positive for COVID19, 30 would have potentially been in the hybrid setting, prompting a total of 30 unexpected quarantines of classes and teaching staff across the entire school district.

Regional Data – Northeast

Since the NJDOH’s weekly COVID19 Activity Level Report for the week of 11/14/20, our region (Northeast) was identified as a “High Risk” of COVID19 transmission.  The case rate* percentage was at a 32.83 (very high) and as of 1/2/21 has increased to 37.31 (very high).  The COVID-like illness (CLI) percentage was at a 6.44 (high) and has increased to 7.02 (high).  The percent positivity* percentage was at a 10.04 (high) and has increased to 12.65 (high).

Based on the guidance from the NJDOH’s COVID19 Regional Risk Matrix, where schools should “consider implementing fully remote learning,” and in coordination with the BCDOH and the NADOH, North Arlington Public Schools will continue implementing fully remote learning through February 26, 2021.

As you know, the health and safety of our students and staff is paramount in this decision-making process.  We will continue to monitor daily and weekly COVID19-related reports.  Further updates will be provided as we approach February 26, 2021, in coordination with our Restart and Recovery Committee.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support, as we continue to navigate through these challenging times.

Thank you and stay well.

Stephen Yurchak, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
